| Nowadays courtesy is a little different than it was before, but it doesn’t mean that gentlemen has become extinct. Now there are much less courteous people than it was for example in the last century indisputable, and I think that it is happening in consequence of several reasons.
The first one is the fact that the time of knighthood has sunk into oblivion. Time always changes and people also change and it is normal process. At the present time some people time and again elegize: “What a great time it was forty years ago when people were much more polite!..” Stop complaining! It will never help you. New society requires new behavioral model and it is inevitable.
The second reason as I said before is new society. If you are courteous down-the-line, everybody around you will consider you to be feeble or invertebrate. Our world accepts rudeness better. For instance I’ve heard one story of the girl, who was forced to learn how to cuss out. One day she was on the way home. She went by bus. She had paid for a ticket and was waiting for her odd money, but it wasn’t returned to its owner. He asked the busman politely if he could give back her money, but there was no answer. She tried one more time. No reaction again. She asked louder, but it gave no results at all. Then she blew out and said: “When the hell will you, dumbhead, give my money back?!” And what do you think? He returned girl’s odd money.
The third reason in my opinion is so called the hubs of the universe. Some people, especially ladies, really think that all the people are obliged to help them. If you go back home with huge heavy bags, don’t expect all the men passing by to carry bags for you. One man didn’t offer to help you? Hereafter he is rude fellow! Remember, nobody made you buy so much stuff, but you have bought, now carry it yourself. You shouldn’t consider someone’s goodwill as the matter-of-course, say “thank you” when somebody spends his own time on you.
Many things changed, but there are not so few good and polite people. Remember them when complaining about modern courtesy once again.
